National 4-H Week in Review!

I don't know about you, but I had a blast last week during National 4-H Week! I got to see lots of you during all of our events! Here's the week in review!

Monday night I got to see lots of you at Smitty's for ice cream. I thought our 4-H flavor was great! I took some home to my husband and he ate it all! I was hoping he would leave some for me! We made $69.00 which will go to our 4-H fund.

Tuesday we all got together for Charlotte's Web at Graham Cinema. We had a little miscommunication about which version though. We were supposed to see the newest version (non-animated) since it has lots of reference about 4-H, but instead they played the animated version from years ago. But it was okay cause that's a great version too!

Wednesday we had to call off the dog show because it was sprinkling and we only had 2 dogs to come. I learned that an event like this would be better on a Saturday when it's not raining!

Thursday we gathered lots of non-perishable foods for the Community Services Agency. I took those over this morning and they were grateful. I went into their food pantry and the shelves are pretty empty, so our contribution was most appreciated. Some of you also wrote a few thank you notes to some important people. Feel free to do that at any time! It's always nice to get thank you notes!

On Friday, many of you came by the mall to cast your vote for president. We had a total of 151 kids to vote and John McCain won by 11 votes (81-70). Hopefully there will be an article in the Times-News about that this week. Keep your eye out! We also had a coloring contest and we announced the winner on Saturday morning.

Bright and early on Saturday, we met at Morgan Place Park and had doughnuts and juice. I announced the winners for the poster contest (CB-Reade Allen, Jr-Emma Gadbery, Sr-Sarah Osborne), the jelly bean guess (Malik King) and the coloring contest (Meaghan Gerringer). I also handed out prizes for those who turned in their scavenger hunt pages. Then we got to work. Some of us stained picnic tables, others sanded playground equipment and some spread mulch and gravel. It felt great to help out!

Nutrition Fair & 4-H Shines

Hey everybody, it's time to start preparing for the Nutrition Fair and 4-H Shines! The forms aren't quite ready yet, but below, I'll list the categories and information for each event. Remember, these events are a great way to earn scholarship money that you can use toward other 4-H events or in the 4-H catalog!

Nutrition Fair

Deadline for Entry Forms & Recipes: Thursday, March 13 by 5 pm

Date: Saturday, April 12

Time: 9 am-12 pm; Set up will be from 9-10; Judging will start at 10

Location: Kernodle Senior Center on Mebane St.

Categories: Bread/Cereal; Dessert; Fruit & Vegetable; Milk and Dairy; Meat; Beverage

Change for this year: This year, we are asking that you make two recipes of your dish. One will be for judging and the other will be for the senior citizens.

Guidelines & Rules: You will have a half a table to display your dish. You are encouraged to make it look nice (or theme oriented), and you should have plates/bowls/cups and utensils for the judges to taste your dish. Judges will come around to each of you and ask questions about your dish and it's nutritional information. Be prepared to answer these questions. It is also recommended that you stand when the judge comes to your spot so you are more at eye level with them. Please consider food safety as you are preparing your dishes. Make sure your dishes are at the appropriate temperature. Remember to be friendly and smile! You can never go wrong with a smile! Most importantly, have fun!

For Fashion Revue & Visual Arts, you may only submit one entry per category and no more than 3 entries total for each section (3 for fashion, 3 for visual arts). Fashion Revue garments and Visual Arts entries need to be submitted along with their form by April 14. These items will be judged ahead of the event. Fashion garments will be modeled at the actual event, and Visual Arts items will be displayed at the event. You can take them with you when you leave at the end of the talent show.

Summer Time is Coming!

Hey everybody,

I need your input on Summer Fun. Please respond to this blog by letting me know what kinds of Summer Fun classes you'd like to see this year. Also, if you have any contacts for those classes, that would be quite helpful. As you are thinking about these classes, try to think of classes that are both fun and educational. We may not use everything you suggest, but don't be offended. Sometimes it's just hard to make things work logistically. So, get to thinkin' about what you'd like to participate in (or volunteer to teach)!

Also, let me know your thoughts on how you think registration for Summer Fun should be handled. Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all gearing up for a great 2008! I found a very useful link online that some of you might be interested in. This link has many tools to help you get organized, so it might be beneficial in completing project record books this coming year. This is the Microsoft Office online page and it has lots and lots of templates that you can use. Even in your social life you can use these (I have!). On a similar note, I'm happy to report that we received 60 project record books from you (a little less than last year). They are currently being judged and will be returned to you at Celebration Night.

Speaking of Celebration Night, please join us for an ice cream buffet and a fun time on Tuesday, February 19 at St. Mark's Church in Burlington. We'll start at 6 pm, but clubs are encouraged to set up a display that showcases what they've done in 2007 before we get started. We will be giving a prize to the club with the most impressive display!

The theme for Celebration Night this year is the Wizard of Oz. Costumes are optional, so you can dress up like a character from the movie, or just come dressed as an Alamance County 4-Her. I sent an evite out, so if you haven't received that, please let me know and I'll send you one (beth_davis@ncsu.edu). We will also be showing a slideshow of pictures from 2007, so if you have some digital pictures that you would like to include, send them my way!

Project Books Due Thursday!

Hey everybody,

Don't forget that your project books are due this Thursday by 4 pm! We'll take them any time before then as well. We are having our final project work day today from 4-7 pm. If you have questions about completing your project, call, email or come by and we'll do our best to help. We have examples of other projects if you need to look at those for help. Below is the poem that I wrote last year to help motivate you to finish your projects. Enjoy!

Your 4-H project record books are close to completion
Be sure to click “save” in case of accidental deletion

Make sure you fill out the front page form all the way
Get it done now so you’ll have time to play

Try to make your story interesting and cool
But check your spelling and grammar so you don’t sound like a fool

Add lots of neat pictures to show what you’ve learned
For a ribbon and scholarship money, you might earn

Last but not least, keep your projects nice and neat
Because for the judges, you’ll want them to be a treat

Whatever the topic, be it sheep, canning or rocks

4-H Camp in 2008

Even though we saw snowflakes fall this morning, it's time to start thinking about summer 4-H camp. Crazy, huh? The details are below. Let me know if you're interested in attending.

WHAT: 4-H Camp
WHERE: Millstone 4-H Center (Ellerbe, NC)
WHEN: June 30-July 4 (Sunday -Friday)
WHO: Youth ages 8-12 (13-14 yr olds can be jr. leaders; 15-17 yr olds can be CIT)
DEADLINE: We need to know if you plan to go to camp by Feb. 1 to reserve you a permanent spot; we will also need a $50 deposit
COST: $200 (thanks to a donation, we were able to cut costs again this year)...this includes a tee shirt, transportation and camp fee

Winterfest

Join the NW teens as we travel to the Green Hill Center for NC Art in Greensboro to learn more about Expressive Arts. We’ll be spending the night at the YWCA and then just walk over to the Art Center the next day. Meet us at the YWCA at 7 pm on Friday for dinner and entertainment. We’ll end our time together on Saturday around 12 pm.

Guess what? That means it's time to start finishing up on those project record books! But this year, we are here to help. We have scheduled 4 different days for you to come to our office and work very hard on your projects to get them done in time and look great! 4-H Reminders

Hey everybody, here are a few reminders, so be sure to take note!

ARI Academy/State Council Conference:
If you are between the ages of 11-15 then you are eligible to attend the ARI Academy. This event will provide you with the skills to be successful in filling out applications, creating resumes, and conducting yourselves interviews. You can use these skills to compete for national 4-H trips or for when you start applying for college or jobs in the real world. It's a very beneficial event and I hope you can come!
State Council Conference is for teens ages 13-19 and will center around the new state theme, which focuses on expressive arts.
Both of these events will occur at the same time at the same place.

Cost: $110 (25% off for County Council Officers)...can use scholarship money!
Deadline: Friday, October 26
Who: 4-Hers ages 11-19

Wreath Sale:
We will be selling wreaths through November 16 to help build the scholarship fund. This is also a great way for individual 4-Hers to help themselves. For every wreath a 4-Her sells, they will receive $5 in their scholarship fund. Order forms can be found on the 4-H website, listed below.

County Council Elections:
If you would like to work on your leadership skills by being a county council officer, then be sure fill out your nomination form! Those running for office must be at least 13 years old and have been in 4-H for at least one year. If you want to run for president, then you must have been in 4-H for two years. Leader Meeting:
Leaders, mark your calendars for Thursday, November 29 at 6 pm. This is the next Leader Meeting and I would like to see a representative from every club. If you are a leader of a club and cannont attend, please ask another parent in your club to attend for you. That way you will have someone who can bring information from the meeting back to your club. I need to know who will be attending ahead of time, so check out the deadline below. Dinner and hopefully childcare will be provided. If there are any teens that would like to volunteer to babysit, please let me know.

Next County Council Meeting:

Plus, this is a great way to stay up to date on upcoming 4-H events. And you can meet new people! We will probably be forming a Celebration Night committee as well.

Project Work Days:
Do you wait until the last minute to finish your project records? Are you confused about how to put them together or what to do? Well this is the perfect opportunity for you! I will be there to help you, you can use our computers and craft supplies, and you can use the help of other volunteers and 4-Hers. It will make doing those dreaded projects more fun! I might even have some refreshments for you!

Celebrate National 4-H Week!

The first full week of October is when we always celebrate National 4-H Week. This year, that date is October 7-13. Here are several ways we'll be celebrating in Alamance County:

Poster Contest
This is for any 4-Hers 5-19. Decorate a poster to show what 4-H is to you. Turn them into the 4-H office by Monday, October 1. They will be judged and then hung in libraries in the county. The winner will recieve a $50 scholarship.

4-H Spirit Night at Beef O'Brady's
Come to Beef O'Brady's on Monday, October 8 between 4-8 pm and wear your 4-H tee shirt to celebrate National 4-H Week. Alamance County 4-H will recieve 15% of the proceeds. Beef O'Brady's is on S. Church St. near Correct Time Plaza.

4-H Congress Update

This past week, 8 Alamance County teens and I traveled to Raleigh for NC 4-H Congress. The participants were Sonia Cousineau, Berkley Jones, Sarah Osborne, George Correia, Austin Langley, Jennie Langley, Emma Troxler and Tamlyn Solomon. This was a weeklong conference where youth can make new friends and try new things. They also have state level competitions at Congress, such as Presentation finals, poultry judging and horticulture judging. So, here's a rundown of how the week went.

Monday:

We loaded up the van and headed to NCSU where we got checked in to our lovely dorm rooms. Then we all convened at the new Expo Center at the Fairgrounds for the opening assembly and parade of counties. Sonia Cousineau was our flag bearer. We also got to watch the State Fashion Revue.

Tuesday:

Some of the participants went to workshops and others observed presentations. Daniel Osborne came up for the morning and swept the Public Speaking competition by winning State Gold! Congratulations Daniel! Jennie Langley and Emma Troxler gave their presentations in the afternoon and Emma won State Silver. Afterwards, we headed back to the dorms for a little R&R since it was going to be a long night of dancing! We had dinner at the fairgrounds where Dr. Marshall Stewart talked to everyone about having the power to do whatever you want in life. We were also introduced to all the state officer candidates. Then, we danced the night away!

Wednesday:

Wednesday is the Hands to Service Day where we go out into Raleigh and provide community service. Part of our group (George, Sonia & Sarah) stayed at the McKimmon Center to give their input on 4-H marketing. The rest of us went to the Inner Faith Food Shuttle where we helped bag vegetables. These foods were sent to places that feed the hungry. After a busy morning, we came back to the McKimmon Center for lunch and district meetings where we all had a chance to talk to the state officer candidates. Then it was free time! We headed to Crabtree Valley Mall for shopping and dinner on our own. That evening, we had the pleasure of being entertained by 4-Her's across the state in the 4-H Entertains Showcase. Our very own Austin Langley was chosen to perform for this show. She played a saxaphone solo. The evening ended with a Science Fair Extravaganza.

Thursday:

The day started of with the state theme assembly on "Cloverology: A Scientific Solution." The morning was filled with science related workshops. I was invited by the organizers of Clovers & Company to come watch them rehearse, so Sarah, Emma, Jennie and I went to the Expo Center to watch them. Clovers & Company is a performing arts troop out of George 4-H. They sing, dance, have their own band and even have their own stage crew. I thought it would be cool to take the Emerald Ensemble members over to see the rehearsal. Once workshops were over, we ate lunch as a group and then headed back for state officer elections. Then it was time to head back to the dorms to get all dolled up for the farewell banquet. During the banquet, Clovers & Company put on a bang up performance. Then came the farewell dance and the candle lighting ceremony. The candle lighting ceremony is where all the 4-Hers stand in the shape of a huge 4-H clover with lit candles. It's a tradition that we've carried on for years.

Friday:

Time to go home! On Friday, we packed up and headed back to Burlington. It was a fun and eventful week. Thanks everyone! I hope you plan on coming next year!

NC 4-H Congress

For those of you who are 13-19, this is for you! NC 4-H Congress is a week long event in Raleigh that focuses on teamwork, leadership, community service, and the state theme (Cloverology: A Scientific Solution). Congress will be Monday, July 16-Friday, July 20 and we will be staying on NCSU's campus in one of their dorms. The total cost of Congress is $225, but you can use scholarship money towards this event, and there is also one more full scholarship up for grabs. Just let us know if you are interested in this and we'll get you the application. This is a fun-filled and very rewarding week (I know because I've been going for years!). I need to know who wants to go to Congress by Thursday, June 28 so that I can register you.

Emerald Ensemble Teen Choir

We still have plenty of space in the Emerald Ensemble Teen Choir. At this time, we'll now accept 12 year olds into the choir. Below is the who what when where.

What time is it? It's PRESENTATIONS time!

That's right, it's time for you to start practicing your public speaking skills! This is one of the most beneficial programs that NC 4-H offers, so get ready to participate. You might be wondering, "what is a 4-H presentation?" A presentation is basically, a person standing in front of a group talking about something they are interested in for 5-12 minutes. For example, when I was in 4-H, I gave a presentation on making pumpkin bread. So I talked about the recipe and also about the nutritional information and why bread is good for you. I also made the bread mixture right there in front of the judges. Presentations can also be done in teams of two (preferably two children in the same age group).

I did presentations for 9 years, (because my mom made me) but I am so grateful I did them. Because now, I am more comfortable talking in front of a group of people. A lot of adults are terrified of public speaking, but I bet if they did a 4-H presentation, they wouldn't be! In a 4-H presentation, you may be informing people of something, or you may be demonstrating how to do something. The choice is up to you. Below, I'll list all the categories as well as important dates to remember. I hope you will seriously consider doing a 4-H presentation!

Poster Contest!

If you like being creative, here's a great opportunity for you! This is the 2007 4-H Career Exploration Poster Contest.

Who can participate?
All youth, ages 9-18. Three age divisions (9-10, 11-13, 14-18).

When?
During the months of April, May & June

Where?
We'll hang your posters here in our office!

Why?
To investigate and learn more about a career that interests you.

Theme:
Career Exploration

How?

1. Poster must be on standard poster board and must be of uniform size (22" x 28")--other sizes are ineligible.

2. Use theme to select a career you are interested in adn share it with us! For example: "Explore Nursing!"

3. Copyrighted materials should not be used (i.e. newspaper and film cartoon characters may NOT be used).

4. Posters must contain only original artwork done by the artist (cut outs from magazines/prefab or professional clip are is not allowed).

5. Keep it simple and to the point.

6. Display the poster in a pominent location in your hometown during the month of May or June. For example: local library, grocery store, school, or extension office.

7. Complete a contest entry form and tape/paste it to the back of your poster (ask me for more info on this).

Scoring Guidelines:

Originality (attracts attention, holds interest)--30 points

Follows career theme--30 points

Conveys message (easily understood)--15 points

Accurate information (factual)--15 points

General Appearance (well planned, good design, easy to read)--10 points

Winners:

The top two posters in each age division from each participating county will move onto district competition. District competition will be held during District Activity Day in Rowan County (June 26) with the top poster in each age division at each of the district level events competing for state awards. The state competition will be held in July during 4-H Congress. All state level entries will be displayed on Tuesday of 4-H Congress.

County winners will recieve a certificate.

District winners will recieve a District Award Ribbon.

State winners will recieve a State Award Ribbon and $25 cash prize.

Complete an Application and Resume by May 15
Participate in an Interview in September
Hopefully win a trip to either Atlanta or Washington, DC!

If you are interested in this opportunity, let me know. There is an application on the NC 4-H website (www.nc4h.org) that you need to fill out and then create your own resume. I participated in this when I was in 4-H and I have also been an interviewer, so I've seen this process from both sides. Make sure you complete your application and resume BEFORE May 15!

Summer Fun Registration!

4-H Summer Fun Registration begins next Thursday, May 3. We will open registration at 3 pm and it will stay open until 7 pm that evening. After Thursday, you can register Monday-Friday between 8-5. Check out the online Summer Fun brochure to see what classes you might be interested in coming to. Remember to have your payment ready (checks can be made out to Alamance County 4-H), along with your medical release forms. Medical Release forms MUST be notarized. See you at registration!

4-H Shines

Don't forget to enter 4-H Shines! The DEADLINE to turn entries and foms in is next Monday, April 16. Make sure you turn everything in by 4:30 pm! The forms can be found at this website: http://alamance.ces.ncsu.edu/files/library/1/4-H%20Shines%20Forms.pdf. Remember, if you are entering the Expressive Arts or the Fashion Revue, you need to bring your entry AND your form on April 16. These will be judged before 4-H Shines and will be modeled/displayed at the event. Then you may take them home after it's over. Also, only submit one entry per category. For example, in the Expressive Arts portion, you cannot enter two entries in the photography category, but you can do one in photography and one in crafts. If you have any questions about this, just call me at 570-6740 or email me at beth_davis@ncsu.edu. 4-H Shines will be Tuesday, April 24 at the Mebane Arts Center. We will BEGIN at 6 pm! Hi Everybody! Welcome to the Alamance County 4-H Blog! I will continue to post upcoming and updated information on this site to fill in the void that the newsletter can leave. I hope you all continue to check this blog periodically (I would say at least once a week) to make sure you aren't missing out on anything cool 4-H has to offer. So spread the word about the blog, add comments, and have fun with it! Just remember to keep things appropriate. So long bloggers!
